Bee Jokes Film Update: Lather, Rinse, Repeat

Ahh, we’re finally down to the nitty-gritty, the real work…

Welcome to the staging/blocking production loop:

  • Type some code
  • Render the frames
  • Grab a snack
  • Look at the rendered results
  • Type some more code in
  • Repeat as necessary

I’m about two weeks into it; how long it will take, I have no clue. With my hand-drawn animations, I usually know how many individual drawings I need to produce, and can create schedules & deadlines based on a daily image count. No such luck with the computer-generated stuff — it’s always a W.A.G., and it’s never right. Meh. What are ya gonna do…

I probably won’t post anything more about the film until I finish staging & blocking and move to the initial edit.

Goodbye, Twitter — Facebook, You’re Next

In news that will interest no one but me, I’ve pulled the plug on the DanBee’s Doodles Twitter account, and said goodbye to that silly piece of the Internet once and for all. The DanBee’s Doodles page on Facebook is heading in that same direction, too. Not sure when exactly I’ll give it the boot — I may wait until after the bee jokes film drops. Whatever. I don’t know. I don’t care. Apart from links to my blog posts and images, I haven’t posted anything worth spit in probably two months, maybe longer. It’s a huge waste of time, and I have better things to do.

If you’re one of the very small handful of people from those sites that’s shown any interest in my art, films, and/or blog posts, I say thank you and ask that you subscribe to the website feeds to stay up to date on the latest DanBee’s Doodles offerings. Go to the ‘Subscribe’ widget on the far right side of this page and select whether you want to have images and blog posts sent to you via e-mail (easiest way to go) or RSS. There are no ads, spam or spyware, I’m not harvesting your email addresses, and it’s totally free. Did I mention it was free? Well… it’s free. We like free. Free is good. Free is our friend. So, if you love free, be a pal and subscribe today.

Once again, I thank you for your support. Have a GREAT week…

Bee Jokes Film Update: Pre-production Almost Over

The spectre of spending two whole weeks trying to map out dialog syllables for the bee jokes short scared the crud out of me enough to blast through the whole thing in only two days. Awesome sauce! I’m always in a good mood whenever I get that particular monkey off my back — it’s a stinky monkey, and it likes to bite and throw… things. I don’t think I need to tell you what kinds of “things”. Yeah…

Anyways, we’re moving on to the last little bit of pre-production, and that’s going through the various models of our characters and props, and making sure everything is up to snuff. There shouldn’t be any extra coding work involved since I updated these models last year; rather, it’s a matter of refamiliarizing myself with how these stupid bees actually work… if you can call what they do “work”…

I plan to start blocking and staging the first scene around August 7th. It won’t take that long to get everything ready — in fact, I could probably start staging as early as tomorrow, if I wanted — but I want to use any extra time between now and then to work on the doodle reload. I won’t have much time to draw anything else once cameras start rolling, and I’m still not happy with the number of doodles I have on hand. Guess this means I should stop yakkin’ and start drawin’, huh? I think so, too…

A Rose, By Any Other Name…

Change is good…

You may have noticed a different face to the Goofy Graffix blog lately, and that’s no accident. I decided to rename the blog to DanBee’s Doodles and incorporate it as a menu item to the main redesigned DanBee’s Doodles website. Should be easier to get back and forth between the two, although their RSS feeds remain separate (to change the blog feed’s name would’ve required breaking everyone’s link to it, which wouldn’t have been very smart). My public “face” has been DanBee’s Doodles for some time now, so it makes sense to bring the blog in line.

Now that that silly business is out of the way, we can get back to the good stuff: doodles, comics, and filmmaking!

I have fresh new doodles to post starting Monday — no more sketch reruns! Yayy! My goal is put out fresh art twice a week again. Longer-range goals include bringing back Three-D Thursdays, only now it’ll be called Three-D Fridays (I was going to go with CGI Fridays, but that name has already been taken and thoroughly abused. Boo…). Like before, it will showcase my work with POV-Ray and Blender — models, short test reels, abstract weirdness, the like. I’ll post more about it when the time comes; meanwhile, enjoy the freshly-ground silliness of my doodles and comic panels. Mmmm, mmm, good eatin’…

Just as I thought, I was able to amputate about thirty seconds worth of bloat from the new bee jokes short film this weekend, and I’ve begun the joyless task of matching spoken dialog syllables to frames and milliseconds — truly, the bleakest part of animating. I have to break it up into managable sections lest my brain implode from the self-imposed drudgery. I’m hoping it won’t take the entire two weeks I’ve scheduled for it; if I can burn through it before the coming weekend, I will do backflips for joy (well, maybe only one, and then it’s a trip to the E.R. and some know-it-all doctor saying, “Dork, you’re too old for that kind of crap!”)…

Let me know what you think of the site changes. Have a GREAT week…

Status Report for July 20, 2010

I finally got the DanBee’s Doodles reload on track this past week, going from zero drawings to having enough for three whole weeks. Yayy! That said, I’m putting out sketch reruns this week. Booo! Sorry, Charlie, I’ve got my hands full trying to revamp both the DanBee’s Doodles site and this one, so no fresh stuff ’til next week. You understand, right? Right??? Yeah…

In other news, the initial draft of the animatics reel for the bee jokes short is finished. For now, the film is clocking in a few seconds shy of three minutes, and that’s minus titles and credits. I say “for now” because after listening to the audio and watching the animatics unfold, I’m thinking this thing is waaay too long. I could safely cut thirty seconds worth of bee blabbering and you’d never miss it. So, that’s what I get to do now. I was hoping to get dialog mapped out syllable by syllable this weekend, but I’ll probably push that back til the following weekend. Just as well — mapping out dialog is far and away my least favorite part of filmmaking, so any chance to dodge it for a week or month or two is fine by me. I wonder if that’s what studio interns get stuck with in Hollywood. Hmmmm…

Status Report for July 9, 2010

Last week I went through my sketchpads and scrap paper, and identified all the doodles I wanted to work on for the DanBee’s Doodles reload. Tuesday I put those doodles in a big pile and grabbed three pages at random — a doodle lottery! It’s been very slow going since then. I’ve only managed to get two, maybe two and a half drawings penciled, absolutely nothing inked or colored.

Progress on the bee jokes short is equally slow. Last weekend I slogged through all the raw audio files to select the dialog parts I want to keep. I had hoped to have an animatics reel completed by now, but I’m still stuck on assembling the master audio file.

Grrrrr…

Oh, well, painfully slow as it may be, it’s still progress, one step closer to the finish line. I’m hopeful I can get my master audio finished this weekend; if I can convince Real Life to quit bugging me for a day or two, I might even ink and color those penciled drawings and add another week of life to DanBee’s Doodles. That would be sweet!

…oh, and to make it official, I’m picking Spain over the Netherlands. Should be a great match!

Oscillation

We’re kicking off the second half of 2010 with work for the latest bee jokes short and the DanBee’s Doodles reload swapping places in the production schedule. DanBee’s Doodles now occupies the coveted Monday-thru-Thursday slot, with film work sliding back to Fridays and Saturdays. The schedule will stay like this for the foreseeable future. Can’t helps it, peoples — I’ve done run outta drawin’s to post! I only have enough stuff for next Monday and for the 13th of July, and that is IT! If I delay any longer on making new illustrations, I’ll be forced to repost old sketches and crud from ’08 and earlier, and we really don’t want to go there…

Like I mentioned before, though, running out of drawings is actually a blessing in disguise. I’ve been wanting to get away from just doing simple illustrations of yet another monster or alien standing around. Gets a bit boring after awhile, dontcha think? Yeah… now, if you’ve been a frequent visitor to the site, you’ll no doubt have noticed a shift in emphasis from those type of drawings to more of a comic-panel format, and the changes I’m planning continue right along that path. Basically, we’re talking comics, comics, and more comics…

Is this the webcomic I’ve been talking about since February??? Ummm, well, no… that guy is still spinning its wheels. Rather, these are the comics I should’ve started off with first, before I tried to tackle something very big and very crazy. Anyway, I have loads of sketches, scribbles, jokes, & stories that I’ve been going through, and quite a few of them are slated for life as a doodle strip (hey, it could be worse — they could be stuck in some brainless PowerPoint presentation)…

And the bee jokes short? Alive and well, thank you. Turns out I didn’t need to replace any dialog, and I’m in the process of assembling an animatics reel for it. I don’t believe having the film’s production time segregated to the weekends will be a huge obstacle; it’ll just take a bit longer to get done. I should think you would be used to that by now ;)

More to come…
